Re-forest the forest tree sale - Kingwood Garden Club, November 2007.The Kingwood Garden Club held their 7th annual Re-Forest the Forest Tree Sale on Saturday, November 3rd 2007 at 8 a.m. Over 250 trees were on sale this year, and all available plants were sold out by 10 a.m. What a testimony to the vital need for such a worthwhile program within our community.

Since the inception of the program a total of over 6,052 trees have been sold to local residents to replace lost trees or add to their existing stock. The program began as a spin-off of the Neighborhoods Project in Austin. The findings were that the public would take more care of, and have more pride in a tree that they had a dollar investment in, than if the trees were a 'free handout'. The public seemed to find that the small investment required to acquire and plant trees paid a big dividend, not only in the beauty of the neighborhood, but in the overall value of their property.

Trees and shrubs, all acquired from local growers, are sold at cost, with prices ranging from $5.00 - $20.00, making something affordable for everyone. The Re-Forest the Forest project is not a fund raiser for the Club. Our community is the big winner here! The objective of the program is to enhance and help maintain Kingwood and it's 'Livable Forest' atmosphere. Even though the selection of material for sale is limited to either native or well-adapted species to our area, the choices are great, with up to 35 species of trees and shrubs suitable as shade trees, under story stock as well as a selection of citrus fruit trees. Garden club members are on hand throughout the sale to answer questions and give advice on the selection of the right material. Help is always available from the club on the planting and after care of the plants.
